What kind of networks essensys can provide and their options?

Understanding your network options

At your site, essensys can provide two types of network. Most customers use the standard Private network, but if you want to run your own equipment you can request a Public IP setup. This article explains the difference so you can choose what suits you.

Private Network - Managed Network

Every customer is provisioned with a Private Virtual Local Area Network (VLAN) by default. This is a segregated, secure network just for your organisation.

  • essensys provides a Private network which uses a private IP range beginning 172.xx.xx.xx.

  • Static IP addresses are provided as standard, running from .2 through to .20 — giving you up to 19 addresses you can assign to devices such as printers, servers, or other fixed equipment.

  • The exact subnet mask, default gateway, and DNS details for your site are available from your on-site team.

Note - Lower addresses (e.g. .1) are reserved for the network gateway and infrastructure, so please don't assign these to your own devices.

Public IP - Unmanaged Network

If you'd prefer to run your own network — for example using your own router or firewall you can request a Public IP which is then provisioned by essensys.

  • With a Public IP, you set up and manage your own network behind it.

  • You can still use the existing infrastructure within your site (see below)

  • To get started, raise a request with your on-site team, who will allocate a Public IP and prepare the ports for you.

Want to still use the existing infrastructure while using a Public IP?

Even though when taking a Public IP you are managing your own network you can still use the structured cabling and Wi-Fi provided by essensys at your site, the below network diagram would need to be followed and some steps done by your centre team.

The following diagram shows the typical Public IP network set up. In this scenario, the occupier has a Public IP (supplied by essensys) for each of their devices that require a public address, and uses the center's LAN network (Wi-Fi Secure, switch ports, etc).

  • The Public IP address ensures that all traffic that is destined for the internet uses the router.

  • Any port managed by essensys will still pass via the router

  • With this configuration, essensys recommends that the occupier manages their own DHCP (DHCP disabled).

It is also possible for the occupier to use their own devices, in which case the WAN-Public IP connection (in red in the preceding diagram) is created, but the client uses their own ports on the router to connect their own devices.

If the client has their own switch, they would connect this to the LAN side of their configured router/firewall. All floor ports in the office would then connect to the client’s switch.
