The essensys Platform provides a number of bandwidth graphs, allowing you to understand bandwidth usage at your sites. This lets you manage services, troubleshoot problems (resolving contention, for example), and analyze your occupier or operator usage.

The default bandwidth usage view is the summary report, a time series showing the bandwidth usage at the selected site.

Tip: Use this view to identify periods of high bandwidth usage at the selected site.

Bandwidth usage summary report

Access the report

All site reports are located in the Operations section of the essensys Platform. To open the correct section:

  1. In the main menu, click Operations.
The Operations page opens. By default, Reports is selected from the overhead menu.

  2. Under Network reports, click Bandwidth.

The Bandwidth usage report opens. By default, the report shows a summary of the Site Bandwidth Usage view of today's data. In this view, the lines on the graph show the usage on each of the pipes at the selected site over the reported period.

Note: Because the selected VIEW shows shared and dedicated pipes, the threshold is displayed. For more information, see Report settings.

Header row

Field

Description

<view> - <site> - <report date>

Your selected view, site name, and the selected period for the report are displayed in the top-left of the page.

These values update when you change your report settings.

If you zoom using the bar below the graph, this <report date> updates to describe the date range that is currently reflected on the graph.

Report body

The report body itself shows the bandwidth usage at the selected site, constrained by the settings to the right of the graphical view. Where the Site Bandwidth Usage view is selected (default), the lines on the graph represent bandwidth usage on the available pipes at the selected site, lines in the other views show usage for downloads and uploads.

On the report itself, you can:

  • View the threshold capacity at the top of the Y- axis.
Tip: For more information about thresholds, see Report settings.

  • Click Hide capacity to remove the threshold. This automatically changes the scale of the graph to fit the highest data point.

  • Drag the handles on the bar beneath the graph to zoom in to the summary report. The report resizes to show the selected sub-section.

Tip: You may do this to zoom in to a peak. The peak represents a point in time when there was high data use.

  • Hover your cursor over the graph to view details of the bandwidth usage at a specific date and time.

    • A vertical line and two markers on the two plots indicate the selected time.

    • A tool tip opens, showing the bandwidth usage at the selected time.

Report settings

Important: Whenever you change the report settings, the report in the main editor is refreshed to reflect your changes straight away.

Field

Description

Threshold (site view only):

  • Show capacity

  • Hide capacity

The threshold represents the circuit size, total bandwidth allocation, or capacity when viewing shared or dedicated pipe details for the site as a whole. The threshold is the capacity available on each pipe.

If you are viewing occupier usage on either a shared or dedicated pipe, no threshold is shown.

Notes:

  • The connection is synchronous, so the threshold is the same on upload and download.

  • When the threshold is hidden or not shown, the Y axis ends above the highest data point for the selected time range.

Site selector

The site that you are reporting on.

Note: This report is site specific, so you cannot select multiple sites.

View:

  • Site bandwidth usage (default)

  • Pipe

    • Superfast

    • Standard

  • Shared

    • <occupier>

  • Dedicated

    • <occupier>

The bandwidth usage data that you are viewing in the report:

  • If you select Site bandwidth usage, the report shows all bandwidth usage at the site, with each pipe (superfast, standard, or dedicated) represented as a line on the report.

  • If you select Superfast or Standard under the heading Pipe, the report shows the bandwidth usage for uploads and downloads on that selected pipe. See About bandwidth pipes.

  • If you select an occupier name under the heading Shared, the report shows the occupier's bandwidth usage on a shared pipe.

  • If you select an occupier name under the heading Dedicated, the report shows the occupier's bandwidth usage on their own dedicated pipe.

Note: The options that are available for selection depend on the network and occupiers at the selected site.

Date:

  • Day (default)

  • Week

  • Month

  • Custom

<Selected date>

The date range for your report.

Click Day / Week / Month / Custom to open the calendar tool, and select the date or date range for the report.

The <Selected date> beneath those buttons displays the initially selected range.

Type:

  • Download

  • Upload

  • Total (default)

Choose the type of bandwidth data to include in the report:

  • Just upload data

  • Just download data

  • Both download and upload data

Note: This is option is only available where site bandwidth usage or one of the shared pipes is selected in the view drop-down list.

Detail

Select the type of report that you want to view:

  • Summary - This report.

  • Client breakdown - The breakdown of bandwidth usage on one of the shared pipes. One of the shared pipes must be selected in the view for this option to be available.

  • Applications - A pie chart describing bandwidth usage by different applications or protocols. An occupier must be selected in the view for this option to be available.

  • IP Breakdown - A bar chart describing bandwidth usage by different IP addresses. An occupier must be selected in the view for this option to be available.
