View details of the devices connecting or connected to the Wi-Fi Guest network at one or all sites.

The overview (shown by default) summarizes these connections using bar and pie charts that show:

  • The currently connected devices.

  • The daily total connections.

  • The top 5 devices by days online or time online.

  • The top 5 devices by bandwidth usage.

Tip: To see the non-summarized version of the same data, click Detail from the Report type setting. For more information, see Guest Wi-Fi detail report.

Notes:

  • Wi-Fi Guest is a Wi-Fi network that users typically connect their devices to when visiting a site. For more information, see Wi-Fi overview.

  • Devices are pieces of equipment, such as mobile telephones or laptop computers. One user can have a number of devices connected to the Wi-Fi Guest network concurrently, but each device is represented separately in this report.

Access the report

All site reports are located in the Operations section of the essensys Platform. To open the correct section:

  1. In the main menu, click Operations.
The Operations page opens. By default, Reports is selected from the overhead menu.

  2. Under Wi-Fi reports, click Guest Wi-Fi Overview.

The Guest Wi-Fi overview report opens. By default, the report shows devices connecting to your Wi-Fi Guest network across all of your sites, this week.

Devices connected now

The report shows devices that are currently connected to the Wi-Fi Guest network:

  • Where multiple sites are selected in the Site selector, the slices of the donut represent the devices connected at each of the selected sites.

  • Where one site is selected, the slices of the donut represent the devices connected to each of access points at the selected site.

Note: This report is only shown where the selected time period includes the current time, and where there is at least one device connected to the Wi-Fi Guest network at the selected sites. Otherwise, the following message is displayed:

Field

Description

Donut:

  • Total devices (center)

  • Location breakdown (slices):

    • By site

    • By access point

The central number is the total number of devices that are currently connected to the Wi-Fi Guest network at the selected site or sites.

The slices represent those same connections, broken down by location:

  • If the report shows multiple sites, the slices each represent the connected devices at one of the selected sites.

  • If the report shows only one site, the slices each represent the devices connecting to one of the access points at that site.

Tip: Use the Site selector (top-right) to select one or more sites.

Donut:

  • Hover cursor over "slice" of the donut

Hover your cursor over a "slice" (a section of the donut) to open a tool tip describing:

  • The site name or access point name that the slice represents.

  • The percentage of the overall amount that the slice represents.

Donut:

  • Click "slice" of the donut

Click either a "slice" or a value in the first column of the table to open the Guest Wi-Fi detail in a pop-up.

For more information, see Guest Wi-Fi detail.

Note: If too much data is returned to display in the pop-up, see "too much data" message.

Table:

  • Site name (multiple sites selected)

  • Access point (one site selected)

  • Number of devices

  • Percentage

The table shows the same data as the donut chart.

  • If multiple sites are selected, the first column shows the site name, and the other columns indicate how many devices are connecting at that site and what proportion of all Wi-Fi Guest connections those connections make up.

  • If only one site is selected, the first column shows a particular access point at the selected site, and the other columns indicate how many devices are connecting to that access point and in what proportion relative to all access point connections.

Daily total devices connected

The number of devices that connected to the Wi-Fi Guest network at the selected site or sites. The bars each represent the number of connections on a single day, and the report period dictates the number of days included along the X axis.

Field

Description

Key:

  • Number of devices

  • Now

  • Average

For the selected site or sites, the report shows the following:

  • The number of devices that connected to the Wi-Fi Guest network each day of the selected period (the current week, by default).

  • The number of devices that are currently connected to the Wi-Fi Guest network.

  • The average number of devices connected to the Wi-Fi Guest network over the reported period.
Note: The average is the total number of online devices, divided by the number of days in the period.

Hover (tool tip)

Each column represents the connections on a particular day.

Hover your cursor over the column to view a details tool tip summarizing the details on that day.

Top 5 reports

Each of these reports provides an "at a glance" view of the metrics for the devices connecting to the Wi-Fi Guest network, with the five devices with the highest consumption or longest time online shown in more detail.

Each panel uses a pie chart and basic table to summarize the following:

  • Top 5 Devices By Days Online (above). Shows the devices that reported the most days online during the reported period.

  • Top 5 Devices By Bandwidth. Shows the devices that reported the highest bandwidth usage over the reported period.

Note: Includes bandwidth usage data for both downloads and uploads. May not include ongoing connections.

  • Top 5 Devices By Time Online. Shows the devices that reported the most time online over the reported period.

Info: The pie charts show the top 5 devices and "others". The "others" slice shows the data for all of those devices whose connections are outside of the relevant top 5.

Field

Description

Pie chart

The pie chart graphically represents the percentage of the total value consumed by each of the top five devices.

The slice "others" represents the proportion of the total consumed by devices that are not in the top five.

Pie chart:

  • Hover over "slice" in the pie chart

Hover over a "slice" to open a tool tip:

  • For a slice that represents one of the top 5 devices, the tool tip contains the device MAC address and relevant metric (days, MB, duration) for that device.

  • For the "others" slice, the tool tip contains "others" and the relevant metric (days, MB, duration) for all of the devices that are not in the top 5.

Pie chart:

  • Click "slice" in the pie chart

Click either a "slice", or the corresponding MAC address in the first column of the table, to open the Guest Wi-Fi detail in a pop-up:

  • Where the slice or MAC address represents one of the top 5 devices, the detail view is filtered by the selected MAC address.

  • For the "others" slice, the detail view is filtered only by the report settings (site selection and time period). It contains all details, including the details of the top 5 device connections.

For more information, see Guest Wi-Fi detail.

Note: If too much data is returned to display in the pop-up, see "too much data" message.

MAC address

The MAC address for the connected device.

User name

Any user name or email associated with the connected device.

This name is entered by the user when they connect their device to the Wi-Fi Guest network.

Device type

Where available, the type of device. For example, this may be APPLE.

Metrics:

The final column indicates the value that the pie chart is reporting.

> Days

Top 5 Devices By Days Online:

The Days field indicates how many days each device has been online during the reported period.

> MB

Top 5 Devices By Bandwidth:

The MB field indicates the bandwidth usage for each device during the reported period.

> Duration (XXhXXmXXs)

Top 5 Devices By Time Online:

The Duration field indicates how long each device has been online during the reported period.
